7-20 seems very unlikely to drop from lvl 10 after all these years of farming. Do you have details as to where it dropped? Screen of unid item on floor/of chat log entry "blabla dropped blub. Your party reserves..."? Or a screen of the unid item at the merchant showing its unid value? Vanguard seems more like the source - if charr bosses were, that however would be insanely interesting. Considering value - quite costy! 50-60 for the slaying mod, another 1-2 for the sundering, the axe itself without mods 200bd++

I was wrong Never paid attention to the lower end dmg range before.

Photoshop? Max Axe is 6-28. Don't think I've ever seen the lower end range be higher than the max damage range set (excluding the Event Weps). If by the unlikely chance that it is real, I'd reckon it's worth quite a bit; though the enchant base kinda sucks. But pre max is 7-19, or Indeed 7-20 as here

The loot value distribution looks somewhat like the figure above. It's a continuous distribution fitted into a computer which makes it kind of discrete (because a computer has not infinite resources for calculation).
Assuming the way this axe has made its way into presearing is legal, I believe this:
It's not that some developer at some point said something like "this item is so good it should have 1% chance to drop", but it's rather the case that by "coincidence" the max value axe might have a chance of 0.001% to roll the high dmg cap of 20 (made up numbers!). By "coincidence" I mean the conversion of the continuous to the discrete distribution. And thus it might be the case that it's indeed the first 7-20 axe to drop, and maybe even the last.
Edit: No matter how and why and what, Haunted, congrats on the axe!

Redball's pc seems fairly accurate. Though you have to consider an auction could always change that for the better. Develish

Yes would say red is fairly accurate but in an auction setting it could create a bidding war and I'm sure I would be one of them in that war. If you decide to sell lmk would love to add to my axe collection

Hmmm, I heard about this axe a few days ago but was waiting for visual confirmation... It now makes me question the axe I purchased about a year ago which was supposedly a VG drop (7-20 dmg as well). This one also has a gold value that is within the normal range (according to this: presearing.boards.net/thread/1986/merchant-gold-values-items-presearing), mine has much lower value. I would presume this had a unid value of 17g (otherwise it wouldn't be possible)? I would PC this at 500BD+ ez...

It would be possible at 16g unid even - I also checked that - sadly it didn't give away anything for sure. At 16g unid it can go up to 64g id. How much was yours worth unid/id?

I was talking about the damage, can 16g unid axes have 7-20 damage? For it to be that rare (like my 16%HSR fire staff), I think it has to be in the 17g unid value class. My axe has an id value of 34g (7-20 dmg q9).

My axe has an id value of 34g (7-20 dmg q9). Well - identvalue=(unidvalue+random)*rarityfactor where random is in the 1g-unidvalue range, rarityfactor is 2 for purples. That means yours has unidvalue+random=17 where random >=1 that means unidvalue <= 16 Thus - that damage range is possible on a purple axe at unid value 16g. (I didn't know that before either and would have guessed like you but seems we both were wrong thanks for that insight!

Wow, so if it had higher value we would assume it was probably 17g. That's very cool. I am now wondering if a 17g axe might have higher damage (6-21)? Oh well we might need to wait for 15 more years

Beautiful axe ! Sry for a bit off topic but whats all this about having VG quest active affecting drops max dmg ? I think most ppl would have no end to how much thay pay for it.."E-say"... JK As far as we know, having or not having a vanguard quest active does not affect drops. However, Haunted says that the noob who got the drop didn't have a vanguard quest active, which leads to the potential conclusion that having a vanguard quest nerfs the drop table slightly (if so, it would probably be a bug). Is it so farfetched to consider that when all drops were removed from the high-level vanguard foes, perhaps higher-end drops of charr were affected as well? Is the code written so that the only thing stopping vanguard foes from dropping items is the fact that they spawn with a vanguard quest (sorry, written slightly confusingly, but I hope you get the gist)? It may be worthwhile to do some testing of charr killing without a vanguard quest active.
Also Akara when you got those 16% hct staves, did you have vanguard quest active?
Edit: To add to the above: Perhaps when vanguard foes were first added (and they could drop items) the drop table of Charr received an unintentional buff (which would explain this item not dropping in the presearing of old) and when vanguard drops were removed, the drop table of charr was affected in the way described in the first part of this post. Considering that the vast, vast majority of charr killing is probably done with a quest active (for the armor boost), it would make sense that an item like this would be so rare. This is all very speculative, however.
Edit: Maybe someone could contact that one active gw developer and have him look at the drop mechanics and upper limits of weapons in the code? www.reddit.com/user/DrStephenCW/
