Hello possums!
I started GW2 last night and am kinda just wandering around not really sure what I'm doing. Do you have any tips for a newbie to the game?
Thanks!

Do events, wander around n explore, and most important find something to do that you think is fun

I'm trialling it just for something different. But, WOW! it is so confusing compared to GW. I don't think I will play it for long.

You better don't. It never will satisfy your desires, as you are spoiled from the overall quality the original guild wars has to offer. I really - I mean REALLY - tried to like guild wars 2 as much as I could, I even spent about 3000 hours in this game, always hoping that the next patch/update will bring the dot on the i... but it never came, and I don't believe it will ever come... At some point my interest in GW1 returned, and so did I. Just my experience, though. Maybe you like it.

I really do love the freedom of running anywhere and jumping tho... :/ Oh, and the pretty costumes!

I give it a Max of 3 months.
Its a lot of fun, but if you are expecting GW1 from it, DON'T. You only end up being hurt and disappointed.
It is a decent game of you pretend it wasn't part of the GW franchise ;D

Everyone seems to mind their own business. There is so many players yet it still feels like your playing on your own. :x

If you are into pvp, the wvw scene in gw2 is pretty neat. If you are not, wvw is a good mix to gateway you into pvp. Its my main game mode there, the new reward revamp for the game mode has shown that the devs try to listen, despite how salty most of us are (eg things like it being the only game mode where legendary gear makes sense, and they finally added it to wvw). The pve is a bit meh, especially as f2p unless you like the fractals system. sPvP is a toxic cesspool filled with people endlessly whining about balance, but I personally prefer sPvP to pve.
However, GW2 has actually gotten quite a bit better in general. The core is still really easy, they've dumbed it down to the point that level 1-80 is basically a tutorial (while making the actual tutorial phase utterly devoid of challenge and fly against common sense). So once you gotten your fill you might be thinking of the expansions/story packs for sale, so here is a brief guide just in case you are interested (chronologic order):
The living world season 2 stepped the difficulty up a bit, but mostly added 2 grinding maps for people who like that sort of thing (maps are f2p, story cost gems unless you logged in when it released). Expanded the map west.
The Heart of Thorns xpac basically brought the open world difficulty to a new level which requires you to actually learn the basics of situation control, adds account bound "grinds" to unlock new abilities that were for the most part pretty pointless gating and 10man 'raid' content that requires proper planning and teamwork that might be more appealling to the guild wars 1 lovers as the challenge is more appropriate. The main mechanics of the HoT maps are working together with almost the whole map of people to achieve common goals cumulating in big boss fights. Expanded the map further west.
Season 3 brings 6 small, but imo interesting maps that are pretty much only for farming mats for gear with short story bits as a prologue to the Path of Fire xpack (maps and story are locked in the gem store unless you logged in when it came out [was like a 3 month window for the ls3 per chapter]). Expanded the map in many directions.
Path of Fire brings 5 large maps that are mostly targeted at an explorer audience and has a lot of fan service for gw1 fans by heading south to Vabbi. They took the pretty meh mastery system introduced in HoT and expanded in ls3 and applied it to mounts, which has seemed to have worked much better this time around. The challenge is still higher than core, but lower than HoT. The story content was on the other hand leaps forward compared to gw2 story thus far, probably guild wars 1 ish quality level (very subjective). Spoiler: Kormir is still useless.
Living story 4 should be coming in a few months, no idea where or what it holds. Despite this, I'm mentioning it now because all you need to do is log in during the release 2-3 months of any given chapter to get that chapter unlocked free for your account, so it is worth logging in to check imo (I took a break from gw2 during ls2 and half of ls3, but still logged in every few months to unlock the story/maps)
