I was just on this site using firefox when out of the blue my screen was switched. A very real looking Microsoft Official Site was on my screen with a notice overlaid that said my computer was blocked. The notice said that my computer was infected and I must call their toll free number immediately without closing the screen, because if I closed it I would not be allowed windows access.
I wasn't that gullible. I minimized the screen and pulled up IE to check the Microsoft Official support phone # and of course it did not match. I then googled Microsoft browser scams and found the exact same scam on YouTube.
It is not an actual virus, it is a phishing expedition only. You cannot click off the notice either. You have to close the whole page, which they say is detrimental to your computer. If you call the #, they walk you through remote access...and then they DO have control of your computer. Don't fall for this! I used the task manager to exit, then ran my virus and malware scans.
So, tell your friends and family, just to be on the safe side.

Was this from an Advertisement on this forum? If so, I'll be buying the option to remove ads if this is the case.

According to Microsoft it pops up everywhere, right thru pop-up blockers. It is happening on almost every browser in the last few months, regardless of the site you are on. No, although they are annoying at times, it's not the ads. It's just random. You can check it out on youtube. If you need the link I can set it in here, but there are more than the 1 that I recognized.

TBH I just recently added Firefox because IE would no longer support some of my husband's sites. I was always leary of it, because I heard it had lousy security, but it was better than hearing him curse ^^ What exactly does ghostery do? Updated 21:30 Found the info on it, but the comments are that the new version, 7, is useless. Is this the version you are using? If so what are your thoughts on it.

Sorry, haven't been on in a while. I use whatever the latest version is. My wife tried using it and found it irritating. I like it because it blocks all of the ads and trackers, stops most pop ups, and lowers my annoyance of the web. It will block the usage of some legitimate site functions, but you can whitelist them. I do that for sites I use every day.
