So according to wiki and people in general, the Vanguard Initiate armor rating is effective against all damage in presearing. Well I did some testing and it simply is not. Easily spotted with lvl 1 bandit flares, catacomb flame geysers and nightmare chilblains. Thinking maybe it was just vanguard foes plus all charr, I went ahead and tested the lvl 5 flamewielder flares and again the vanguard bonus was not effective vs them. At this time my best guess is that it only additionally affects non-vanguard foes in the northlands or simply only lvl 7 and higher foes.
I further tested pyromancers insignia while under vanguard initiate and it would only negate flares from lvl 1 bandits and lvl 5 charr but not northlands charr hunter ignite arrow nor blazefiends flare.
I also tested a focus item from the crafter with +5ar. Was not effective under the Vanguard Initiate buff. However, a focus with +4ar -20hp did still function. Unlike the Rinblade, the +5ar crafted focuses do work otherwise.
The Rinblade. Often called a great starter sword for charr hunting due to its high damage and +5ar vs charr. Well sadly its armor rating doesn't do anything. Yep, it just flat out doesn't work. Tested against flare (both lvl 5 charr and lvl 10 boss) and charr hunter ignite arrows.
Figured I would leave the findings here. Will continue to investigate.

Good research! I seem to vaguely recall an article or dev statement claiming the vanguard initiate buff was supposed to work against enemies level 5 and higher, perhaps some testing against the bull is needed.
If that's not the case I wonder about the charr at the gate enemies, where they are charr, and a higher level it should work, maybe help narrow down where it does/doesn't work.

The charr at the gate are level 5. I am thinking about death leveling one of the charr fire callers there to see if it is a fluid buff. Shouldn't take too long with frenzy/healsig spam against flare.

Its all explainable In german i could it easyie ;( Vanguard only triggring at lvl 6 or higher. Rinblade is always buggy. The 5 ar charr never count. AR from caster offhand drops count, too

AR from caster offhand drops count, too kk ty for info. I actually accidentally came across this when death leveling a dire melandru's stalker a month back. I went there and was like wow, he does so much damage, good ! When he leveled up his damage tanked hard and then I noticed I had vanguard buff on and sadfaced. Came back after dropping quest and his damage was good again all the way up to lvl 15 when I capped him. Will still go ahead and dlvl a lvl 5 charr and verify it tonight.

Leveled a lvl 5 fire charr to lvl 6 and the vanguard buff kicked in and his flares went from (naked)38 damage down to (naked w/ vanguard buff)9 damage. Which fits in line with a lvl 17-20 ranger buff of 55ar + 30ar vs ele which = +85ar vs fire or a factor of ~ *.2293 damage according to wiki numbers.
Worth noting that the vanguard buff overrides your armor's base ar and also any bonus ar for lvl 6 foes or higher. May explain why something like pyromancers insgia is ignored for lvl 6+ foes but also still functions when encountering lvl 5 or lower foes.
Checked the german wiki and they apparently already had the info about it only being effective vs lvl 6 and up foes. Edited english wiki to reflect this.

Yeah with Wiki u are right. There is no info about the lvl 6. But here in Forum is a Thread, where we dicussed it long time ago There are more VQ Specialized. So for exampel the catacombs vanguard mobs doesnt count as undead or skeletts. They Count as human. If u get dmg from them u cant protect with species shield. But if u do dmg On them u can increase with a weapon undead/Skelett mod... Thats very confuse
