Alright, so 2 people were solo farming charr (in 2 separate instances) right around the same time, and they each got a water staff drop (both are pictured below): Could it be possible that game mechanics made these extremely similar items drop at around the same time (or possibly at the same exact time ), in 2 separate instances of the Northlands, or was it pure coincidence? Due to the rarity of even a single purple item dropping from Jaw (not to mention ones so similar!), it would be extremely unlikely to encounter such an occurrence by chance. Has anyone else encountered anything like this?

Definitely luck, there is some cool explanations on purple/rare drops on the wiki though, worth a read!

Once upon a time, maybe in 07 or 08, the officers of a guild I once belonged to, was doing a drop study. Individually they would all exit town as close to the same time as possible, kill everything in the instance, then return to town. They would compare the drops. They did this for a couple of weeks over and over in the same areas. After a while, they split into two separate groups, leaving a few minutes apart, again individually. Based on what they were seeing, they were saying, the drops are determined when you entered a zone.
When they all entered the zone at the same time, the drops were very similar, and gold coins were within a few coins of each other. Rares, although not exactly the same, were almost equal in occurrence. Chests were in very close proximity to each other and had the same number of chests. When they split into the two teams, each team got similar drops to those on the same team, but very different from the other team.
With all the changes and updates since then, who knows how the drops are determined now days. Back then, they looked like game mechanics.

Link (hope it works now)worth a read so basically could be game mechanics (in case they entered exactly simultaneously) or random (in case they entered just mere fractions of a second apart from oneanother)

Link doesn't work. Is there a working one? Edit: Never mind. I just needed to copy and paste it. Wow! That is very interesting indeed. Just the sort of information I was looking for. Thank you!

Thank you! fixed! (the linkage got cut off at the exclamation mark when just pasting the link in, thus it obviously couldn´t work)
